In June 2019 the Canadian Forest Service Carbon Accounting Team (CFS-CAT) and Chile’s Climate Change and Environmental Services Unit (UCCSA) at the Corporación Nacional Forestal (CONAF) hosted 29 participants from Chile, Belize, Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras, Peru and Uruguay, in a technical training workshop on the Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBM-CFS3). The CBM-CFS3 simulates all forest carbon stocks required under the UNFCCC and is compliant with carbon estimation guidelines of the IPCC.
Participants included Bosques Andinos that gave a presentation on their forest carbon research in South America, Eve Crowley, Deputy Regional Representative and FAO representative; Luis Gianelli, CONAF’s Chief of Forest Plantations and Luis Carrasco, CONAF’s Head of Upper Management of Forestry Development and Promotion.
The workshop was conducted under the Canada-Chile Agreement on Environmental Cooperation. Travel support was funded by the UNFCCC, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (COSUDE) and SilvaCarbon. In addition, SilvaCarbon supported two bilingual technical experts to assist Spanish-speaking participants.
After the workshop CFS-CAT, CONAF’s UCCSA and SilvaCarbon had a day of discussions about the application of CBMCFS3 and/or GCBM in Chile’s National Forest Monitoring System. One of the objectives is to increase transparency and reporting for forest GHGs.
