The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released a special report on Climate Change and Land.
The IPCC is the Nobel Prize-winning scientific body working on climate change research through contributors from all over the world. A majority of the authors of the latest IPCC report on Climate Change and Land are from developing countries. Dr. Werner Kurz, Senior Research Scientist at the Canadian Forest Service and Chair of the Technical Steering Committee of moja global, is one of the lead authors of the report.
This particular report has been in the making for over two years and covers changes in greenhouse gases in relation to land, food security, desertification, land degradation, land-related impacts of climate change and response options.
The report highlights that land is a critical resource that can be part of climate action if managed properly. Proper management can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement goal of keeping the increase of the global average temperature well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C. The Paris Agreement saw many countries commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through activities in the land sector.
The current situation calls for an urgent need to increase the efficiency of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions reduction from land use.
Moja global software, the Full Lands Integration Tool (FLINT), is a tool that can be used to make implementing and operating emissions estimation systems for the land sector achievable by all countries. It provides a framework for countries to develop their systems, data, products and capacity in a progressive manner without the constraint of specific methods or models. In simple words, the FLINT enables countries to monitor and manage land productively while still reducing emissions. The IPCC report indicates a need for the increase in the use of such tools.
