February 23, 2026: moja global and the Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources (FMENR) of Democritus University of Thrace have announced a new Memorandum of Understanding to enhance the Greek monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for the LULUCF sector. The partnership will improve estimations of greenhouse gas emissions and removals in Greece using open-source tools, including the Generic Carbon Budget Model (GCBM) built on moja global’s Full Lands Integration Tool (FLINT) platform, to deliver more accurate, transparent, and forward-looking climate data.
The collaboration includes training and capacity building among Greek experts and collaborative work to estimate past emissions from Greece’s land sector and to develop projections of future emissions under alternative scenarios, including land management actions aimed at enhancing sinks and reducing sources of greenhouse gases. This technical foundation will support the building and enhancement of long-term capacity to sustain future analyses and annual reporting through Greek staff, institutions, and resources.
“At our department, we are committed to advancing our ability to generate credible, transparent data for climate decision-making. Partnering with moja global strengthens our technical capabilities and supports the development of evidence-based recommendations for the future of forest monitoring in Greece,” said Spyros Galatsidas, Professor in the Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources, DUTH.
The results of this work will also inform policy recommendations on future forest monitoring activities, further improving land-sector MRV system in line with evolving climate goals. This work will be carried out within the framework of the LIFE24-GIC-EL-LIFE-LULUCF-ATLAS project, co-funded by the European Union. The project is coordinated by the National Technical University of Athens, School of Chemical Engineering, which serves as the national institution responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the planning, preparation, and management of the annual national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory across all sectors.
The agreement reinforces moja global’s commitment to making credible emissions estimation tools accessible to countries and institutions seeking to strengthen climate reporting. It also supports FMENR’s expertise in advancing Greece’s land-sector MRV and improving the evidence base for national climate planning.
“This partnership will increase Greece’s ability to better understand past land-sector emissions and explore future scenarios with confidence,” said Asger Olsen, Co-Director of moja global’s Management Board. “When countries can model how land-sector choices affect greenhouse gas sinks and sources, they can make smarter climate decisions. We’re proud to be supporting these ambitions with the FLINT platform by partnering with FMENR.”
The MOU is effective through 2028 and focuses solely on academic, scientific, and capacity-building cooperation.
